We are proud to represent Ms. Smith for the harms and losses she suffered when multiple Baltimore City police officers viciously attacked her, destroyed her cell phone that she used to record another officer abusing a child, then arrested and charged her for false charges that were ultimately dismissed. During the lengthy civil trial, the judge allowed improper questioning of Ms. Smith that tainted the entire trial. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal reversed the decision and remanded the case back for trial. This decision is an important win for civil rights and civil liberties, as well as any case in which .
We are extremely pleased with the court’s ruling on yet another sad and difficult case where the police department and its officers violated the rights of law-abiding citizens. Police officers have a unique role in our society. They have the important and difficult job of protecting public safety, but they also must perform their duty without sacrificing civil liberties. This ruling now allows Makia Smith to get a fair trial not only against the police officers who abused her but against the department that allowed this behavior to run rampant for many years.
